Our democracy is in trouble. Participation is down, voters don’t believe that government is working for them, people don’t think that their voice counts.
If we don’t disrupt this cycle of disempowerment and cynicism, it will keep getting worse.
Participatory budgeting (PB) is a tool to for action. It’s an opportunity for real people to have real people over real money.
When communities directly decide how to spend a part of a public budget they:
- Learn how government works.
- Become leaders in their community.
- Build more organized and resilient local networks.
We hosted two opportunities to become an expert in PB or in Citizen Juries and Assemblies, plan to strengthen this work in your community, and connect with leaders like you.
Thanks to all who joined us and who believe that we can change this together.
Introduction to PB Training
We know it’s a difficult time to work on engagement and democracy. People are tired of politics as usual, and are tired of their voices not being heard. Our democracy is not working.
At the Participatory Budgeting Project (PBP), we have a solution: Share real power over real money, launch PB in your community. Thousands of people across North America and around the world are already taking budgets into their own hands and building civic power with PB. Are you ready to get started?
Our Introduction to PB Training provides a solid foundation in the principles and mechanics of PB by taking participants through a full PB process. Hear case studies, develop practical skills for facilitating PB, and gain insights into challenges and ways to overcome them. Leave with concrete strategies for moving PB forward in your community.
Advanced PB Training
You know that participatory budgeting (PB) is a better way to spend public money. You know that PB engages those most affected by budget decisions in finding solutions. You know that PB builds new connections that make communities more resilient. You know this because you’re already running PB in your city, state, department, organization or school.
But, how can we do it better? How can PB be easier to administer so that you can focus more on its impacts? How can we reach more of our community and make PB a stronger tool for equity?
If you’re looking to take the next step, this day is for you.
Our Advanced PB Training is a space to learn best practices, gather new tools, and discuss innovations with a community of fellow PB practitioners. Strengthen skills and troubleshoot together through demonstrations. Strategize about how to improve the impact and integrate equity considerations into your local PB process. And, explore ways to make PB easier and better.
Citizens Juries, Citizens Assemblies, Sortition and More
Take a deep dive with the Democracy Research & Development (Democracy R&D) Network.
This pre-conference workshop will gather global leaders involved in the Democracy R&D network to explore key themes, opportunities, and shared challenges among organizations and practitioners seeking to employ citizens jury, citizens assembly, and sortition-based deliberative projects and reforms in a variety of contexts. Attendees will share learnings for effective program design and implementation and discuss systemic, political, and environmental challenges and opportunities that affect the application, adoption, and utilization of these methods. Attendees will leave with a deeper understanding of how experiences from global colleagues can inform and support their own work. While anyone is welcome to attend, this will be a fairly advanced conversation so workshop attendees should have at least basic experience with or exposure to the methods and approaches outlined above.
