Lodewijk is a member of the Stanford Crowdsourced Democracy Team and PhD student in Management Science and Engineering at Stanford University. The team aims to scale up collaboration and decision making by providing the online platform PB Stanford. The platform is open-source and free to use, and allows cities, foundations and other organizations to run a Participatory Budgeting process among their constituents. It is being used in cities such as Cambridge MA, Chicago, Seattle and Vallejo.

Why do you believe innovations in participatory democracy are important?

Thanks to new developments, we can ask more nuanced questions, and make optimal use of the knowledge and understanding of citizens that want to be involved with policy making.

What do you hope to see at the 2018 Innovations in Participatory Democracy Conference?

Involving citizens in decision- and policy making is a good first step in building trust. I look forward to getting to know more people working in this field across and beyond the US!
