Rachel Mims

Program Officer | National Democratic Institute

Rachel E. Mims is a Program Officer at the National Democratic Institute, a nonpartisan organization working to support and strengthen democratic institutions worldwide through citizen participation, openness and accountability in government. Rachel works to support the political inclusion of young women and men through programs that contribute to reducing barriers to their participation, transforming power relations, and developing norms of greater inclusion and respect of young people. Rachel’s passion for inclusive democracy stems from her career as a social worker and years of experience partnering with young people to support their well-being and increase the scope of youth voices.

Why do you believe innovations in participatory democracy are important?

Young people require the space and opportunity to develop their capacity and contribute meaningfully, however they are often excluded from decision-making processes that affect their lives. Innovations in participatory democracy can further contribute to the inclusion of people who have been traditionally denied a voice.

What do you hope to see at the 2018 Innovations in Participatory Democracy Conference?

I hope to be inspired by change agents working diligently to transform their communities and learn about strategies for inclusive youth engagement.
