General Director | Participando por México

Antonio believes in strenghtening civic engagement as a way of improving democratic institutions and achieving political justice and social equality. He is General Director of Participando por México (Participating for Mexico), a non-profit association dedicated to promote citizen participation in order to build solutions, share ideas and tackle public problems. The aim of the association is to reduce the costs of citizen participation in information, organization and bridging.

He studied at Centro de Investigación y Docencia Económicas (CIDE), Mexico City, on its program of Political Science and International Affairs. For his thesis he tested the influence of municipal government capabilities and electoral competition on the offer of participatory mechanisms.

Why do you believe innovations in participatory democracy are important?

Because the non-electoral democratic controls – a.k.a participatory democracy repertoire – are means for ensuring better solutions to public problems and better government performance.

What do you hope to see at the 2018 Innovations in Participatory Democracy Conference?

I hope to meet and learn from people who are challenging a system which prefer to have fleeting glances of people’s voices instead of incorporate their demands and intelligence permanently.
